Till, Swartz & Shepard

Emmett Till was beaten to death. Emmett was beaten so badly, his mother left the casket open. His crime: whistling at a white woman.

Aaron Swartz was terrorized by States Attorney Carmen Ortiz. Aaron chose the swift justice of a noose over the prolonged agony of a gavel. His crime: freeing information.

Matthew Shepard was robbed, pistol-whipped, tortured and tied to a fence. Matthew was left to die. His crime: being gay.

If you don’t know these boys, by name, if you’re not aware of these boys, and how they died, you’re not paying attention.

Not only is it important to remember they were murdered. Even more, it’s important to remember they were boys.

Adults think of other adults as being full of shit. Adults perceive authority as questionable. Rolling your eyes when another adult tells you what to do is the first step toward becoming a “Grown Ass Man.”

Boys think of adults as having the magic power. Boys perceive authority as unquestionable. Boys don’t roll their eyes. Boys act-out.

Whistling at a white woman, posting information online and coming out of the closet are nothing more than examples of boys acting-out. They’re moments of divine bravery.

The moment after the divine moment, beware, you will be stomped on. The moment after the divine moment, beware of children with grey hair, children with grey pubes, balding children, bald children, children with sagging tits, menopausal children.

Beware of adults living their lives in an extended adolescence.

Chief among them, beware of brats on the bench, caught-up in the childish spectacle of prancing around in robes, banging with hammers, playing with their imaginary friend, Justice.

They don’t care about you. They don’t care about your children. They don’t care about protection, equal protection or standing-up to bullies. Most of all, they don’t care about standing-up to bullies.

They’re bullies. Bullies don’t stand-up to other bullies. They rule in favor of cruelty. So beware.

Emmett Till, Aaron Swartz, Matthew Shepard. These boys skipped the divine step between boyhood and becoming a “Grown Ass Man.” They became lessons.

What a waste, since we’re incapable of learning.
